Your Weekly Dose of EEE #3: Aerial Dispatches
Hey, you lovely people!
I’m writing most of this this from the air near the coast of Venezuela!
This has been a wacky week—a day of work on the sequel, a day split between day job and three deadlines I barely met, a day at a conference, and a day on an airplane. All leading up to today, which I’ll be spending in paradise, tyvm.
I have plenty to say about taking a five-hour flight with a toddler, but none of it is exciting, entertaining (okay, maybe a little), or enlightening, and so I’ll leave those thoughts for another day.
What’s Exciting Me?
Barnes and Noble will be fulfilling special orders for When We Were Mothers, and while it’s not on shelves yet, I hope it makes it there!
All She Wrote Books will also be carrying the book, and this is super exciting as it’s a feminist/queer bookshop right in my backyard in Somerville, MA.
I sent out my first Sequel Chronicle to paid members on Monday. Here’s a sneak peek. If you want to watch the whole thing, you can! Just become a paying member and support my goal of producing an audiobook version of When We Were Mothers.
I wrote a fun short story from the Prompt Party last week and posted it here just for Nicci’s Notes readers!
Installment 2 of My Self-Pub Life dropped yesterday! The topic is ideating—that work which is so helpful to do before our fingers ever touch the keys. Read it here if you’re interested!
Oh, also—I’m in Aruba. 😊
What’s Entertaining Me?
📺 The Wire! This show kills me. We just finished Season 4, and holy man. I feel so much for all these characters, and I am so so so sad about the character that was killed. It was inevitable, but that doesn’t make it any easier to stomach.
🧟 The Last of Us! I finally watched Episode 3, and man what a faucet my face was. What a beautiful and tender story. Nick Offerman, OMG. And also the guy who played Armond from White Lotus (Sorry! Wifi isn’t working and I can’t look it up). Stunning.
📖 I have been so tired and busy this week, I haven’t been reading much. I think I got 2 pages read in Don Quixote. 🤣 And that’s really it. I do have a couple of books with me, but vacations with 3 kids aren’t really vacations, so I’m not counting on having any time to read anything at all. If I do, it’ll be a bonus.
🎶 The day has come when my kid has requested I turn off the Hamilton soundtrack, and so I’ve had to branch out. I spun up a playlist I created when I was writing my very first novel. It’s quite the eclectic mix, because the story takes place in two different time periods and also two parallel universes. Here are some selections:
Jamie Lawson, All is Beauty
Ricardo Arjona, Desvanecer
Austin Mahone, Say Hi
Gavin Rossdale, Love Remains the Same
Jon Bellion, The Good in Me
What’s Enlightening Me?
This week, I’m thinking a lot about how creativity engenders more creativity. I am in a creative mode as I work on the sequel, and as I work on some other projects that involve writing to a specific prompt or theme. I used to have such a hard time putting together a short story. But I’ve written two this week, in not a lot of time, which makes me realized how much I’ve grown and developed over the last several years.
So. If you want to get good at something, the best way is to—wait for it!—DO IT!
That’s it for today. The beach is calling me. As always, comments are welcome if you have thoughts about any of the above—or recommendations for future E, E, or E.
Until next time,
